How to get coins graded in the UK

To get a coin graded in the UK, you send it to NGC (or a banknote to PMG) through an authorised dealer such as Numistacker, who packs it, submits it and brings it back to you graded and slabbed. With Numistacker you register free, list your coins online, post them or hand them over at our London office, and follow every step online until they come home. On average the whole journey takes about two and a half months (as at October 2026).

Who can submit coins to NGC from the UK

Anyone in the UK can have coins graded by NGC, but most collectors do it through an authorised dealer rather than directly.

Through an authorised dealer. Numistacker is an NGC and PMG Authorised Dealer based in the UK. You need no membership of your own: we submit under our dealer account, handle the shipping to and from NGC, and deal with any questions NGC raises.

Directly to NGC. Collectors who submit to NGC themselves need an NGC membership, and then ship their coins to NGC and arrange the return themselves.

Going through a dealer is usually simpler for UK collectors: one UK address to send to, no international shipping to arrange, and someone to ask when anything is unclear.

For a small number of coins it is usually more cost-effective, too. A dealer consolidates many collectors' coins into each submission, which helps most when each of your coins needs a different tier.

Submitting through Numistacker also opens up special labels, including labels exclusive to Numistacker, so your slab can carry a label you cannot get by submitting directly.

How long it takes

On average, about two and a half months from the day we receive your coins to the day they leave us graded (as at October 2026). All UK tiers take about the same time in general; coins sent for NCS conservation can take a little longer.

The time depends mostly on NGC's own queue, which varies through the year, so the portal shows where your coins are at every stage rather than a promised date.

What it costs

The price of coin grading varies quite considerably with the value of the coin and the tier selected. It is generally better to submit at least three or four coins at the same time, to get the slight economy of scale this brings.

What goes into the price: the tier, which NGC sets by the coin's value and how quickly it is graded; any extras, such as a special label, NCS conservation or a variety attribution; and return postage, by courier or Royal Mail, chosen when you submit.

Every price is shown on the portal once you have registered, and you see the full total before you submit.

Which coins are worth grading

Grading pays most where a certified grade adds confidence a buyer would pay for:

Valuable or rare coins

Where a few grade points make a real difference to the price.

Coins you plan to sell

Especially at auction, where graded coins are easier to compare and to buy unseen.

Gold and modern proofs

Such as sovereigns and Britannias, where condition is everything.

Coins you want protected

Since the slab seals the coin against handling and the air.

A low-value coin in average condition is usually not worth the fee. If you are unsure, ask us before you submit.

Banknotes: PMG

Banknotes are graded by PMG, NGC's sister company, and Numistacker submits them the same way: register, list your notes, send them to us, and follow each one online until it comes back graded and sealed in its holder. PMG adds designations such as EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality) where a note's paper is original. Notes take roughly the same time as coins: about two and a half months on average.

Questions collectors ask

Do I need to be a member of NGC?

No. When you submit through Numistacker, we submit under our authorised dealer account.

Can I hand my coins over in person?

Yes. Book a visit to our London office, Monday to Friday by appointment.

How do I post my coins?

By a tracked service to our London office. We recommend Royal Mail Special Delivery. Keep your receipt and tracking number.

Can I see my coins' progress?

Yes. The portal shows each stage, from check-in to NGC's grading milestones to dispatch.

What if my coin is cleaned or damaged?

NGC grades it as a "Details" coin and names the problem, for example "AU Details, Cleaned". Ask us first if you are unsure about a coin.

Can Numistacker sell my graded coins?

Yes. We consign to trusted auction houses such as Heritage, so your coins reach the right buyers.

Are my coins insured?

Yes, if you request insurance when you submit. Choose it on the portal as you list your coins, and you see its cost in your total before you submit.
