Coin and banknote grading from the UK: your options

There are two ways to have a coin graded by NGC, or a banknote by PMG, from the UK: send it yourself as a paid member, or send it through an authorised dealer. This guide sets out how each one works, using NGC's and PMG's own published rules.

Two ways to submit

Submit it yourself as a member

NGC and PMG accept direct submissions from their paid Collector members (Associate level and above). In the UK you send them to their London office, in person by appointment or by post, on the NGC UK or PMG UK submission form.

  • Regular submissions are graded at NGC and PMG in Sarasota, Florida
  • Graded coins and notes come back to the London office for collection, or by post by arrangement
  • NGC and PMG also take submissions at some UK coin and banknote fairs

Submit through an authorised dealer

An NGC and PMG authorised dealer submits for you, so you don't need your own membership. As an authorised dealer in the UK, we look after the paperwork and the journey to NGC and back, and you follow every coin online.

  • Register free, list your coins and see the tier for each one
  • Post them to us by a tracked, insured service, or bring them by appointment
  • We check each coin against your list and send it to NGC, with NCS conservation if you want it

Grading at UK coin and banknote fairs

NGC and PMG also accept submissions at some UK shows, such as the London Coin Fair, Coinex and the Britannia Banknote Fair, and announce each one, with its dates and conditions, on their own news pages.

We go to coin shows too: you can hand your coins to us at a show we are attending, and we send them to NGC with the rest.

Banknotes, conservation and selling

Banknotes: PMG

Banknotes go to PMG, NGC's sister company for paper money. The same two routes apply: as a paid PMG member, or through a PMG authorised dealer such as Numistacker.

Conservation: NCS

NCS, NGC's conservation service, can carefully treat a coin before it is graded. Through us you can ask for it when you list the coin.

Selling at auction

Once graded, a coin can be consigned to auction. We consign to Heritage Auctions or Spink, whichever suits the coin, and handle the paperwork.

Which route suits you?

If you submit often and would like to deal with NGC or PMG yourself, a paid membership may suit you. If you would rather not join, or want someone to look after the paperwork, the postage and the tracking, an authorised dealer does that for you.

Either way, every grade is NGC's or PMG's own opinion. A dealer looks after everything around the grade, never the grade itself.

NGC and PMG publish the details on their UK sites: how to submit to NGC UK, and how to submit to PMG UK.

Quick answers

Do I need an NGC membership to get coins graded from the UK?

Only if you submit directly. NGC and PMG accept direct submissions from paid Collector members (Associate level and above). Through an authorised dealer such as Numistacker you need no membership of your own.

Where are UK submissions graded?

Regular submissions to NGC and PMG are graded in Sarasota, Florida. NGC sometimes grades in Munich too, and we can ask for that when you submit.

Does a dealer change the grade?

No. Every grade is NGC's or PMG's own opinion. A dealer looks after the paperwork, the postage and the tracking, never the grade itself.
