NGC Expands Eligibility for ‘Carded Bullion’ Submissions

Collectors of carded bullion now have more options when it comes to submitting their pieces to NGC.

NGC® is excited to formalize and expand its certification services for “carded bullion” to include products from several major private refiners, building on its existing acceptance of carded bullion issued by established world mints.

Carded bullion typically consists of a precious metal bar or similar bullion product sealed in a tamper-evident card, which commonly includes identifying information, a serial number, and security features that help establish the provenance and authenticity of the bullion inside.

NGC has previously graded and encapsulated carded bullion from world mints including The Royal Mint, China Mint, Perth Mint, and KOMSCO, as well as Rand Refinery. Now under the expanded program, NGC also accepts eligible carded bullion from PAMP, Valcambi, Asahi, and Sunshine Minting, which are all major names in the bullion marketplace, with widely collected and traded products.

Many carded bullion products have developed a following among collectors because they combine precious metal content with distinctive designs and packaging. Some feature limited and/or themed designs, including licensed properties, making them appealing not only to bullion investors but also to collectors.

In addition, a bullion bar can be difficult to authenticate when removed from its original packaging. The card provides important identifying information that, when coupled with NGC certification, adds additional confidence in authenticity along with the benefit of a standardized description, grade, and holder.

“As carded bullion becomes more popular with collectors, we wanted to provide an extra layer of confidence,” said Dave Camire, Senior Vice President of Conservation and Grading at NGC. “Formalizing the program gives collectors a clearer understanding of what we will accept and enables more products to benefit from NGC’s expert authentication and grading services.”
