Understanding the NGC Options.
Lots of the fun in grading comes from understanding and using the various NGC Options such as crossgrading from PGCS to NGC, labels, conservation, re-holdering, scratch proof holders and much more.

Understanding Pedigrees and Provenance
Conservation

NGC has lots of options and possibilities
If in doubt about what is possible, it always pays to ask
Lets explore the NGC options repertoire.
Crossgrading
If you have a coin in a PCGS holder then it can be submitted to NGC for evaluation with a view to crossing it over into an NGC holder. There are two options, cross at any grade or cross at the current grade or higher.
Dont expect NGC to take account of any * or + designations but if they think the coin merits its current grade or higher it will cross into an NGC holder. No waivers are needed and NGC will remove the coin from the holder and return the PCGS label so it can be returned to PCGS to keep the census clear and accurate.
If you have a coin in any other holder for example CGS in the UK you can send the coin in but it will be removed from the CGS holder and it will be graded as if it were a raw coin.
If a coin does not cross a review fee is charged by NGC but at a lower rate than a tier based grading fee. In practice about half the coins that are entered crossover to NGC holders.
Reholder
Sometimes a holder can become scratched or cracked or the dog may have mistaken it for a slipper. In those instances only the NGC re-holder service will do. Re-holders are always with scratch resistant coat and you can specify a pedigree or a provenance or a special label at the same time.
NGC have had many different looking slabs over the years and the current left justified slab is the latest in the line. Before that (left of pic) the writing was centred.
If you have a large slab XXL you can specify a large re-holder (a pretty cost effective option) and if you have a very valuable coin there is a special higher value option for the re-holder service too.
If your coin is already in a deep holder there is no extra charge you just ask for a standard re-holder
Lets explore the little things that can be important
Pedigree
Some coin owners lack pedigree and others have it. We help to add your pedigree and we help others to remove your pedigree from the coin slabs that you submit. Many pedigrees do have value and NGC need to approve all pedigree requests before using one.
Provenance
Where does this coin come from? What is its story? These can be critical for some coins. NGC will quote provenance on a coin label but will need you to provide evidence supported by auction listing etc.. Please ask and we will advise on what is possible.
If NGC get it wrong
We all make mistakes and the guys at NGC are only human so mistakes will happen every now and again. The wrong date, country, denomination will all happen. When this does happen NGC are always good about putting it right. Ask NNS and we will deal with it for you.
Varietyplus
For a fee of £13+VATyou can ask us to get any regular catalogue number from Spink, Marsh, Peck, Freeman etc quoted on your coins. Some older coins will also have weight and other factors listed as well.
Mint Errors
Lots of errors are obvious but despite this there is a charge of £14 if you want to request error validation on your coins. If NGC happen to spot an error or variety its a freebie for your benefit.
Do NGC grade anything?
If in doubt please ask. Most coins that are as the mint minted them and from a reputable mint can have an NGC slab. Very occasionally NGC will say “inelligible type”. Many private mint coins such as Germania are gradeable by NGc

Guide to NCS Conservation Tiers
NCS Modern
Many modern coins particularly proofs have a need for specialised conservation to remove handling marks, fingerprints and blotches. Gold can suffer copper spots and silver and suffer from residue, PVC damage and other ailments.
NCS Modern (+£13) per coin total cost
NGC Gold
Gold coins can sometimes need conservation too. Modern high value gold proofs with handling or older circulation gold with copper spotting. If the coin is entered on Gold Tier (£35 total) it can also be conserved at a fixed cost of (+£25)
NCS Gold (+£25) per coin total cost
NCS Regular
NCS regular tier is used for Value tier, Standard tier, Express Tier and XXL coins in particular. Lower value coins have a minimum conservation cost of £20 and higher value coins are conserved for a percentage of 4% or if over 25,000 discounts can be provided.
